The city, just west of the Indus River. The old town, 4 miles (6 km) east, was washed away by the Indus River in 1823. The new town, laid out by Durrani chiefs, was constituted a municipality in 1867.
Dera Ismail Khan is an important transportation junction that is connected t o Darya Khan (Punjab) (12 miles [19 km] east) by a bridge spanning the Indus. Lacquered woodwork, glasswork, mat and ivory work, and lungis (sarongs) are the chief hand-manufactured goods; industry includes textile, flour, oil, and rice mills and soap factories. Wheat, millet, gram, and sorghum are the major crops cultivated in the surrounding area, and camels and sheep are extensively bred. The region is the junction of the Pashtun and Baluchi tribes.
Dera Ismail Khan, one of the most peaceful cities in the country, is a Divisional Head Quarter and a historical city. It is situated at the southern end of North West Frontier Province. Though economically underdeveloped, this seven-centuries old city is rich in socio-cultural heritage, the archaeological antiques and the remnants of the glorious past. Among others, Rahman Dheri, 14 kilometers north of the city, is 3500 BC old and has been the resort of the archaeologists from various advanced countries.

The Gomal Pass in the Suleman mountainous range is historical one and the Gomal Valley has been one of the most significant sites of the origin of Indus Civilization. Eighteenth longest river of world the Mighty Indus glides magnificently in the east while the alluvial soil of Daman (foot of mountain) has been kept uncultivated due to lack of proper and reliable irrigation system. The completion of Chashma Right Bank Canal and Indus High Way have substantially contributed to the development of irrigation system and transformation of socio-economic life of this part of the country.
Geography has influenced its economy and hence the way and standard of living of its people. The people of the Gomal Valley are endowed with the qualities of head, heart,courage, simplicity and sincerity. The people of this area are peace-loving and have made substantial contribution to the freedom movement of Pakistan.
Dera-Darya Khan bridge is the main link connecting Dera Ismail Khan with major cities of the country. Quite improved status of roads in NFWP, D.I.Khan is linked with the rest of the cities of the province by roads which stretch about 300 kilometers down from Peshawar passing through Kohat and Bannu. Rail link is also available from Kotla Jam Railway station lying between Darya Khan and Bhakkar. Air service provides an additional and more comfortable link to the Provincial Capital and other parts of the country.
